Stymphalian Birds

Birds of vast dimensions, with bronze beaks and claws, they thrived on human flesh and infested the marshes round Lake Stymphalus in Arcadia. Heracles shot them with his arrows after scaring them from their covert with a brass rattle which Hephaestus had forged and which Athena gave him as a gift. According to one version of the story, the Stymphalian birds were not fowls but the daughters of Stymphalus, son of Arcas, and a woman by name Ornis. Heracles slew them when they refused to receive him whereas they had welcomed his enemies. [p. 88]
