Arachne

A Lydian maiden, daughter of Idmon of Colophon, who was a famous dyer in purple. She resided in Hypaipa of Lydia. Arachne was so greatly skilled in the art of weaving that she even ventured to challene Athena to compete with her. Athena accepted the challenge, and when Arachne presented a piece of cloth which was so fine both in execution and pattern, the goddess tore the work to pieces in her rage and struck Arachne so violently that in her fright she hung herself from the beam of her loom. Thereupon Athena changed her into a spider. To some scholars the fable suggests the existng rivalry between Athenian weaves and those produced in Lydia. [p. 82]
