Echidna

Daughter of Gaea and Pontus or of Chrysaor and Callirhoe, she was the wife of Typhoeus. She was a monstrous being resembling neither mortal nor god. In the upper half of her body she was a nymph with a beautiful visage, but her lower half was that of a serpent with scales of different shades. From her union with Typhoeus she had as offspring other monsters including the dogs Orthros and Cerberus, the Hydra of Lerna, Chimaera, and the dragons of Colchis and of the garden of the Hesperides. A destructive creature both because of her fecundity and her habit of devouring passersby, she was slain by the giant Argus who thus rid the world of her presence. [p.85]
