Painting on Window Glass

(stand-up pictures)


Most of the drawings that boys and girls make in the classroom end up mounted or matted and hung on the wall or bulletin board. Occasionally, for variety, the teacher may wish to make a stand-up picture. A square piece of window glass and a short length of 2" x 4" lumber that has been notched to hold the glass are all that is needed for a stand-up picture. Using any paints that will adhere to glass and have a transparent quality, the children can paint stand-up pictures to be placed in front of windows. The light passes through the pictures and creates the appearance of stained glass. Some excellent paints are available to the classroom teacher for this sort of activity. However, he can make an adequate substitute by adding a sufficient quantity of clear varnish to colored enamels, which will render the enamels translucent.
