RELATIONSHIPS

[From: Wong, Wucius. Principals of Two-Dimensional Form. New York: Van Nostrand Reinhold Company, 1988.]

Similarity - And Repetition

The visual effect of close similarity is much like that of repetition. Similarity is achieved when a form is repeated with slight external and/or internal variations. Forms in nature are never strict repetitions; no two leaves on the same tree are identical.

Similarity can also be established by rotating a form and displaying different views.

A formal structure can comprise similarly related forms that are not arranged in any sequence, introducing an element of informality to the design.

A more informal design is achieved when the similarly related forms are distributed with similar density.
