RELATIONSHIPS - Gradation

Planar Gradation

Planar gradation does not affect the shape or the size of unit forms. The relationship between the unit forms and the picture plane always remains constant.

Two kinds of planar gradation can be distinguished:

1. Planar Rotation. This indicates the gradual change of direction of the unit forms. A shape can be rotated without diversion from the picture plane.

2. Planar Progression. This indicates the gradual change of position of the unit forms within the structural subdivision of a design. The unit forms can ascend or descend, or shift from one corner of the subdivisions to another, in a sequence of regular, gradual movements.
