RELATIONSHIPS - Gradation

Gradation of Unit
Forms

Within a repetition structure, unit forms can be used in gradation. Most visual and relational elements can be used singly or combined in gradation to achieve various effects. This means that the unit forms can have gradation of shape, size, color, texture, direction, position, space, and gravity. However, three of these elements will be dropped from our present discussion. One of these is color, which is beyond the scope of this book. The next is texture, which will be thoroughly dealt with [in separate listing]. The third is gravity, which depends on the effects produced by other elements. Eliminating these, the rest fall into three main groups:

Planar Gradation

Spatial Gradation

Shape Gradation.
