Ajax the Telamonian

The son of Telamon, king of Salamis, and the greatest hero in the Trojan expedition after Achilles. Following the death of Achilles, he quarreled with Odysseus over possession of the dead hero's armour which Odysseus was finally awarded, whereupon Ajax went mad, and at night emerged from his tent and slew a flock of sheep believing it to be the enemy. When he recovered his senses, he took his own life to avoid the ridicule of his comrades in arms. He was worshipped in Salamis where there was a temple built in his honour. [pp. 58-59]
