RELATIONSHIPS

Branching & Fanning

A common feature in the structures of plants and animals is the existence of a backbone or central columnar shape with elements that branch bilaterally or in an alternating pattern. Branching can also take the form of a splitting--one element splits into two, two into four, and so on.

When more than two elements branch, a fanning pattern can result. Fanning can extend 360 degrees, with rotating elements emerging from one central point, or surrounding a large open center.
