MATERIALS & METHODS - Pigments

Range of Application

At the beginning of this century attempts were made to compile a list of so-called standard colors for artists' use. This essentially good idea would have made the purchase of materials considerably easier and safer for painters. Unfortunately, this turned out to be a pipe dream, for even the best pigments of highest quality are not suitable for all techniques. There is only a small selection of "universal" colors. Our catalog of pigments lists under each entry the techniques for media in which any particular pigment can be used. This is most important for the artist who prepares his materials himself or for those who want to explore new methods. [p. 67]
