Iridescence


A color effect caused by the diffraction of light rather than by pigmentation; a play of variegated, brilliant, rainbow or spectrum colors, called diffraction colors. Iridescence occurs when light is diffracted from a thin layer that lies between two mediums of different refractive index [for example, air and water], as in a soap bubble or a thin film of oil on water.
