Color Notation

Any numerical system of classification and identification of colors according to their optical properties, as Hue, Value, and Saturation. Such notation, expressed in precise, scientific terms, is invaluable for technical and scientific use, although hue designation is a more appropriate system of nomenclature for everyday use, as in reference to the products of commerce or fashion. The two most widely used systems of color notation are the Munsell System and the Ostwald System. Other systematized color lists and charts are the Plochere Color System, the Atlas de los Colores [1947], and the Maerz and Paul Dictionary of Color [1951]. [p. 92]
