Ajax the Locrian

Son of Oileus, and captain of the Locrians sailed with 40 ships, and fought heroically at Troy. But with the fall of the city, he fell afoul of the gods by seizing Cassandra from the temple of Athena wither she had fled as a suppliant. On his return journey home, Athena scatterd his fleet, but Ajax succeeded in swimming to a rock with Poseidon's help. Again, however, he offended the deities by boasting that he had escaped in spite of the gods, whereupon Poseidon split the rock on which he stood, with his trident, and the impious Ajax was drowned in the foaming waves.
